psychologist vs psychiatrist

Psychologist vs Psychiatrist: What’s the Difference?

At Cairns Beaches Psychology, our registered psychologists and clinical psychologists provide evidence-based therapy for individuals, couples and families. We collaborate with local psychiatrists (medical specialists) when medication review or more complex medical care is needed. We do not have psychiatrists on our team at this stage.

Roles & Duties in Australia

Psychologists

University-trained mental health professionals specialising in assessment and therapy.

  • Provide talk therapy (e.g., CBT, ACT, EMDR, trauma-informed approaches).
  • Assess and support concerns like anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, sleep, and relationships.
  • Develop coping skills, relapse-prevention plans, and wellbeing routines.
  • Do not prescribe medication (in Australia).

Clinical psychologists complete additional postgraduate training and supervised practice focused on complex presentations and advanced assessment & therapy.

Psychiatrists

Specialist medical doctors (MBBS/MD + psychiatry training).

  • Diagnose and treat mental health conditions with a medical lens.
  • Can prescribe medication and manage complex pharmacological care.
  • Often collaborate with psychologists for combined care (therapy + medication).
  • Require a GP referral for Medicare-subsidised appointments.

At Cairns Beaches Psychology, we coordinate with local psychiatrists as needed.

FAQs

Do you have psychiatrists on staff?
Not currently. Our practice is staffed by registered and clinical psychologists. We collaborate with local psychiatrists when a medical review or medication management is appropriate.
Can psychologists prescribe medication?
No. In Australia, only medical doctors (GPs or psychiatrists) can prescribe medication.
Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist?
You can book directly. If you want Medicare rebates, your GP can assess you for a Mental Health Treatment Plan and provide a referral.
When should I see a psychiatrist instead of a psychologist?
Consider a psychiatrist when a medical review, diagnostic clarification, or medication management is needed—especially for complex, severe, or treatment-resistant presentations.
Do you coordinate with my GP?
Yes. With your consent, we can liaise with your GP and any treating psychiatrist to support safe, team-based care.
